Alternative treatments
Hair transplantation is considered the best long-term solution for people suffering from hair loss. The Ilter Clinic recommends finasterid and (not Rogaine) in combination with a hair transplantation to slow down any further hair loss. However if you do not feel ready for a procedure just yet, there are a couple of alternative solutions you might like to try:
Rogaine
Rogaine is a liquid topical lotion or foam that is dropped or sprayed on the scalp once or twice a day. In the best-case scenario, existing hairs are strengthened while thin hair may start to grow. If the treatment is discontinued the hair reverts to its initial state after about four months. Rogaine is available for both men and women.
Propecia
Propecia is a pharmaceutical preparation administered in tablet form (the active ingredient is finasterid) to be taken once daily. About 50 % of men using Propecia report a slowing down of hair loss. At a dosage of 1 mg per day, the preparation reduces the conversion of testosterone to DHT by 80 %. If treatment is discontinued, the hair reverts to its initial state after about six months. Propecia is for men only.
